Diabetes can cause impotence

Impotence is a condition that affects a man’s ability to get and sustain an erection that leads to positive sexual experience. Although most men do encounter trouble having an erection from time to time, experts say that often, it is the first symptom that some men with diabetes notice before going to the hospital.
Sex seems to be everywhere, on the television, billboards, novels and advertising. But many men often feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about expressing their sexual difficulties, even to a medical professional and the problem continues and become worse, even to the point of endangering the partnership altogether.

Certainly, men will occasionally fail to achieve or maintain an erecting long enough to complete satisfactory intercourse. This does not mean that such men have any sexual problem. In fact, occasionally failure to achieve or maintain an erecting long enough to complete satisfactory intercourse may be a normal ageing change.

As men age, they lose the ability for spontaneous erections from fantasy or viewing suggestive pictures. More foreplay is needed and problem may arise when the partner refuses to participate. Also, penile sensation decreases with age.

For many men, nevertheless, the penis is like a divining rod. A limp penis equates with limp ego and loss of gender identity, and even if men are not sexually active, the ability to have erection and provide satisfaction on demand is part of the male ego and essential for self esteem.

Nonetheless, Impotence, what is medically called erectile dysfunction, may be one of the most important complications of diabetes. Often, it is the first symptom that men may notice and the one that leads them to the doctor in the first place. Only after they have sought medical help for impotence do they also receive a diagnosis of diabetes. Cases of infertility problem due to diabetes are on the rise, you will find that these men cannot have children even though they are on diabetes treatment because they had developed erectile dysfunction.”

Erectile dysfunction, an inability to achieve adequate erection, has different grades. When a man does not have full erection, he will not be able to discharge the sperm in the right place that can lead to pregnancy. Even the early grades of erectile dysfunction are increasing because of what we eat and our lifestyle.”

Men who have diabetes are three times more likely to experience impotence as men who do not have diabetes. Among men with impotence, those with diabetes are likely to have experienced the problem as much as 10 to 15 years earlier than men without diabetes.

Erectile dysfunction in diabetes is no simple matter but it causes are many. The most common causes in men with diabetes are problems that happen from blood vessels and nerve-related complications. Depression can also be a cause, sexual problem occurs in diabetics due to the elevated blood sugar causing damages to the blood vessel and nerve in other parts of the body, including that in the penis.

Men who notice a change in sexual functioning should consult their doctor to determine the cause. Tests can determine if the blood flow to the penis is affected. Blood tests can also help to determine if hormone problems are causing the erectile dysfunction.

There are many effective treatment for erectile dysfunction. For instances, some medication can be recommended by the doctor to treat erectile dysfunction.

These medications help to increase blood flow to the penis, thus enabling the man to have and sustain an erection during sexual intimacy. The medications are taken a half hour before sex and the effects can last from four to five hours.
