ODSG TRAINS TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS


Ondo State government has organized a weeklong skill acquisition programme for the traditional and mission birth attendant popularly known as Agbegis in Akure South Local Government of the state
The programme includes Hat/Bead making, Tie and Dye, liquid/solid soap making, izal making and catering.

While speaking the commissioner for health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju said skill acquisition for TBA’s and MBA’s became necessary because the state government wanted them to be engaged.
            “What we are trying to do is, if we are saying they should refer that means they will be jobless and have nothing to do. The governor has mandate that since they do not have business in delivery anymore, we have to create another opportunity for them so as to empower them in ensuring they have something to do” he stated.
            He posited that if they were exited from delivering without providing for them what can make ends meet, it means they will go into hiding to the delivery.
Adeyanju disclosed that after the training, the state government will provide a micro credit loan for them to benefit from so as to carry on in life.
He said this gesture will prove to others that the government is serious and have a vision to really see that government is maintain its zero tolerance on maternal death. “And also it means that anybody caught after this will be sanctioned as government has given a leverage to exit the job”
Adeyanju also disclosed that the governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko will soon flag off the scale up of the programme officially
According to him, “we are going to have collaboration with Micro Credit Agency, Women affairs, Technical and vocation and other line ministries.”
“The bottom line is that we want to secure our tomorrow, children and pregnant mothers he stated”.
Also speaking, the executive secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Olugbenga Osunmakinde said the state government in his caring heart manner has decided to empower the women through the skill acquisition programme, to provide loans for them after the programme, to ensure that they have learnt and they can have alternative means of earning.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Maternal Death Reduction, Mrs. Funmilola Oluwadare who congratulated the women for being the first beneficiaries of the programme, admonished them to be attentive and learn all what they will be taught.

No fewer than 100 women benefited from the skill acquisition programme.
