Our goal is to ensure affordable and qualitative health care for all citizens of Ondo State

Our goal is to ensure affordable and qualitative health care for all citizens of Ondo State. A prompt intervention in the health sector saw Governor Olusegun Mimiko establishing a Mother and Child Hospital within a month in office, an action applauded by International Organizations including World Bank. Apart from decongesting the Akure Specialist \hospital which is already overburdened by inflow of patients, the Mother and Child Hospital with 5 large wards becomes the first of its kind in Nigeria where first class specialized medicare will be available free of charge to the highly vulnerable group-the pregnant women and children, zero age to five inclusive of surgeries where needed.

This is in addition to the re-opening of closed General Hospital at Igbotako; free eye surgeries for 1,200 beneficiaries, the provision of 1,000 free eye glasses under the 1st Mega Eye-camp Programme and two additional Mass Surgery Festival for 150 persons, at Ikare and Okitipupa has taken place respectively. Government has also initiated the employment of medical doctors under the state government "Apply and Get Employed" policy for doctors.

A break through initiative of the Health Programme is the launch of safe Motherhood Project for Pregnant and Nursing mothers otherwise known as "ABIYE PROJECT". Abiye is a Yoruba term for safe motherhood. It is equally a prayer and a declaration.

Under the project, the pregnant woman, right from day she registers her pregnancy is attached to a team of medical personnel and a doctor for close monitoring. She is given a mobile phone loaded with credit on the bill of the state government, thus enabling her to seek and receive consistent and constant medical attention anywhere she may be even in the remotest part of the village. A programme of free health care for all pregnant women and children, 0-5 years of age is already in place. By this stride, the rate of infant and maternal mortality been reduced. This is in line with the Millennium Development Goal of improving maternal health by tackling the four major killers; Severe Bleeding, Infections, Hypertensive disorders and obstructed labour. The pilot programme for "ABIYE" is already on at Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The state government is already reviving and repositioning the HEALTH RANGERS SCHEME meant to deliver quality health service to the rural communities where they live, work and play.

ONDOHEALTH is another initiative to modernize healthcare delivery in Ondo State. OndoHealth, an online healthcare delivery and monitoring service, is a comprehensive initiative to use Information Technology in the monitoring and delivery of quality healthcare to the residents and indigenes of Ondo State. The fully-developed OndoHealth Portal addresses the following: medical registration process, medical records management, physician documentation and coding practices, ancillary services - pharmacy and laboratory utilization, and discharge and follow up process - with cost management built-in at all stages. The first phase of OndoHealth, a web-based Electronic Medical Record System, has been completed and it is ready for operations.
